Good Samaritan Hospital clinical rotationsGeneral SurgeryExperienced at every PGY level there are a total of six different surgical services at Good Samaritan Hospital, and three at Bethesda North Hospital, offering broad experiences in basic and complex general surgery principles. Endoscopy, basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery, single incision laparoscopic surgery, traditional open surgical cases, multiple outpatient procedures, and bariatric, colorectal, and surgical oncology comprise the core general surgery experiences. Daily clinical responsibilities, in addition to operating, include managing floor and ICU patients. Residents average one half day of office per week. Weekly (General surgery morbidity and mortality, Schwartz conference, Grand Rounds, Tumor board) and biweekly conferences (Vascular surgery morbidity and mortality, Chief’s conference, Journal club) are attended by all residents at Good Samaritan and Bethesda North Hospitals. Thoracic SurgeryA PGY3 rotation offering advanced level clinical and operative management of thoracic surgical patients. A total of 3 months is spent on service as the primary resident, with chief oversight. A full range of robotic da Vinci, open and minimally invasive, and ICU is covered on the rotation. Operative experience is based on skill level. Although cardiothoracic fellows from the University Hospital obtain over 50% of their training at Good Samaritan Hospital, there is no competition with them on the thoracic service. Daily clinical responsibilities, in addition to operating, include managing floor and ICU patients. Residents average one half day of office per week. Vascular SurgeryOffered at the PGY 1, 3, 4, and 5 levels, there are a total of three different vascular surgical services at Good Samaritan Hospital and one at Bethesda North Hospital. Rotations provide a broad and encompassing range of vascular surgical patients with an extensive volume of both open and endovascular procedures. Vascular surgery fellows oversee two specific vascular surgical services at Good Samaritan Hospital. Daily clinical responsibilities, in addition to operating, include managing floor and ICU patients. Residents average one half day of office per week. Weekly (General surgery morbidity and mortality, Schwartz conference, Grand Rounds, Tumor board) and biweekly conferences (Vascular surgery morbidity and mortality, Chief’s conference, Case discussion conference, Journal club) are attended by all residents at Good Samaritan and Bethesda North Hospitals. Emergency Surgical Services Rotation (Night Float)Provided at the PGY 1, 3, and 4 levels, the rotation is structured to provide in-house night call coverage at Good Samaritan Hospital from 5pm-6am Monday-Friday and 9am-6am Sunday. This allows residents to have two entire weekends off every month, with no during the week on-call responsibilities. The Bethesda North Hospital rotation is structured with a home call schedule. Conferences have been structured with the night float rotation in mind. Weekly (General surgery morbidity and mortality, Grand Rounds) and biweekly conferences (Case discussion conference, Journal club) are attended by residents on the emergency surgical services rotation at Good Samaritan Hospital. Residents are exempt from office responsibilities. Outside RotationsMercy Hospital at Mount AiryA PGY 4 rotation, with attending faculty from Good Samaritan Hospital, offering a broad range of general surgery including endoscopy and advanced laparoscopy. Clinical responsibilities as chief (junior-partner) on the service. Direct one-on-one operative experience. Home call structure. Clinic 3-4 half-days per week. Trauma - University HospitalA PGY 2 and 4 rotation consisting of surgical trauma at Cincinnati's level 1 trauma center. As a PGY 4 the clinical responsibility as a chief is provided on service with junior level residents from the University and Jewish Hospitals. Trauma/Critical care fellows oversee the service, which provides a high volume of blunt and penetrating trauma. Call schedule is in-house, and typically every 3rd-4th night. Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) - University HospitalA PGY 2 rotation, which consists of surgical critical care at University Hospital. Clinical responsibility is as a senior level resident with oversight from trauma/critical care fellows. Daily rounds are structured and team based at bedside. Large volume of procedures including central lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, percutaneous tracheostomy, PEG tubes, ventilator management, ect. Call schedule is in-house and typically Q 3-4. Surgical Oncology - University HospitalA PGY 4 rotation offering surgical oncology at the University Hospital, including intraperitaoneal hyperperfusion chemotherapy and islet cell transplants. Clinical responsibility is as a chief on service with junior level residents from University and Jewish Hospitals. Call schedule is weekend coverage only. Shriners Burn HospitalA PGY 2 rotation consisting of complex burn surgery from infant to young adult. Clinical responsibility is senior level. Full management of ICU, rehabilitation, outpatient units. Clinic responsibilities 2-3 half-days per week. Operative experience directly with attending burn and plastic surgeons. Multidiciplinary team rounds held twice daily. Call schedule is in-house and typically Q 3-4. Pediatric Surgery - Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical CenterA PGY 3 rotation, which consists of pediatric surgery with emphasis on basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery. Clinical responsibility is as chief level resident with pediatric surgery fellow oversight. The only Level 1 trauma pediatric hospital in Cincinnati. Call is in-house and typically every 3rd to 4th night. Transplant Surgery - Christ HospitalA PGY 3 rotation with an emphasis on renal transplantation. Large volume of dialysis access experience. Clinical responsibility as chief level resident, with home call. Free of all clinical responsibilities on Sundays. |
