A message from Richard E. Welling MD, F.A.C.S.
Chairman
The Department of Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital has a long acclaimed tradition of providing exceptional patient care, medical education, and research opportunities to benefit both the community at large and physicians in training. Multiple leaders in the field of surgery have been involved in the enormously rich historical growth and development of our department including surgeons George C. Blackman, Roberts Bartholow, Phineas S. Connor, Frank H. Mayfield, John J. Cranley, and William P. Mulvaney, to name a mere few. Following in their footsteps, our extremely dedicated faculty continues to present advancements to our surrounding community and neighbors.
With a commitment to continue providing the most technologically advanced medical and surgical care available, Good Samaritan Hospital recently completed construction on a new 10 story 175,000 square foot tower, adding nearly seven acres of clinical space to the medical complex. Two new cutting-edge and state-of-the-art cardiothoracic da Vinci equipped surgery suites, a new post anesthesia care unit, and a new pre-operative wing consolidated all major surgical services, with access to 22 major operating rooms, to one floor. The new tower also added four new outpatient surgery suites, a new medical surgical intensive care unit, a new hemodialysis unit, expanded services for rehabilitation, orthopedics and obstetrics and gynecology, a new conference center, as well as an entire floor completely dedicated to the Department of Graduate Medical Education. Along with the new construction, major renovations are also underway to improve services throughout the hospital including plans for modernization and expansion of the emergency department and the E. Kenneth Hatton MD Institute for Research and Education.
It is an extremely exciting time for our department as we continue to experience sustained growth in an era of rapidly evolving and highly technological improvements in surgery. Currently utilizing 5 da Vinci robotic surgical systems, Good Samaritan Hospital serves as one of a mere handful of national training centers for the advancement of surgical robotics. The Department of Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital remains committed to providing advancements that will benefit both the patients of today and tomorrow, through research in surgery and medicine, and maintaining a rigorous program of medical education and research for physicians in training.
