Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Training Program at Good Samaritan Hospital. Established in 1928, our program has been in continual existence since its inception, and remains one of the strongest and most sought after community surgical training programs in the country. With a long acclaimed tradition of providing unique opportunities for careers in surgery, coupled with a surgical volume of over 15,000 major cases per year, our graduating chief residents are well suited to pursue further fellowship training, and we have a strong record of placing them into competitive programs across the country.

Our training program places residents in an environment that is medically, surgically, and technologically challenging, with a strong focus on both patient care and research. Combining surgical experience in both private and university hospital settings, our residents learn from board-certified faculty with extensive experience in their specialties. With an abundant surgical volume, our chief residents graduate with no deficiencies in the resident defined categories, and on average each resident will be involved in approximately 1,200 cases throughout their training.

Not only does our program provide a vast surgical volume, our residents also have the unique opportunity to pursue basic science and clinical research, as well as further doctorate degrees. Equipped with dedicated space for basic science bench research as well as surgical training laboratories through the E. Kenneth Hatton MD Institute for Research and Education, Good Samaritan Hospital offers surgical residents the unique opportunity to pursue many kinds of academic research while working in a community hospital.

Fully accredited by the ACGME for 25 residents, including four chief residents, our program emphasizes graduating surgeons of the highest caliber, and our training program graduates are among the top 10% of programs for successful completion of the American Board of Surgery Examination. During our last ACGME site visit in February 2006 we once again received a five-year accreditation with no citations, and were also honored with a "Commendation for Excellence in Surgical Education." With our consistently high board passage rate and placement record for post-residency fellowships, and a long history of graduates with outstanding careers in private practice, research and education, the General Surgery Residency Training Program at Good Samaritan Hospital is a solid building block for any surgeon's future.
