Rotations by SubspecialtyGeneral SurgeryResidents acquire a solid core of general surgery exposure through a large volume of traditional open procedures, endoscopy, and basic and complex laparoscopic surgery including single incision approaches. Residents are introduced to the operating room early in their intern year and build confidence and autonomy throughout their residency training. Chief residents run the general surgery clinic to prepare them as attending surgeons upon graduation. Vascular SurgeryGood Samaritan Hospital has a long tradition of training competent, confident, and accomplished vascular surgeons. There is an extremely well rounded exposure to both open and endovascular procedures. Many residents have graduated only to go on to pursue vascular surgery as a focused subspecialty. Cardiothoracic SurgeryGood Samaritan Hospital is an international leader in cardiothoracic surgery. The department of cardiothoracic surgery is unique in that it has a high volume of da Vinci assisted robotic surgery. Good Samaritan is one of a mere handful of da Vinci training facilities in the country. Opportunities are offered for residents to attend these training sessions in the clinical labs, and to practice on the robotic systems at their convenience. Surgical OncologyThere is ample exposure to fundamental surgical oncology cases on nearly every resident rotation, with a dedicated service offering surgical oncology. In addition, residents will rotate through a dedicated hepatobiliary service at University Hospital during their 4th postgraduate year. Burn SurgeryCincinnati is home to one of the four Shriner's Hospitals in the country specializing in burn care. Second year residents gain extensive exposure to advanced burn surgery techniques including revolutionary cultured cell technology. Trauma SurgeryLevel 1 trauma experience is gained while rotating at the University Hospital during the 2nd and 4th postgraduate year. Cincinnati has a large volume of both blunt and penetrating operative trauma experience. Pediatrics SurgeryCincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, the only children’s hospital in the region, has consistently been nationally ranked in the top five for pediatric surgery. Offering a wide range of subspecialty care, residents rotate through Children’s Hospital during their 3rd postgraduate year. Colorectal SurgeryResidents rotating at Bethesda North Hospital (sister hospital to Good Samaritan) obtain extensive exposure to colorectal surgery through endoscopy, anorectal physiology labs, minor outpatient procedures, as well as complex open and laparoscopic surgeries including single incision laparoscopic approaches. Bariatric SurgeryAccredited as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, residents will gain extensive exposure to Roux-en-y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic banding at Good Samaritan Hospital. Transplant SurgeryThird year residents act as the chief and participate in the renal transplant program at neighboring Christ Hospital. |
