Recovery Goals
Established goals in the Bethesda Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program encourage patients to
take ownership of their recovery. Setting clear expectations for recovery is a successful treatment tool. The
treatment goals are to:
- Be relieved of acute medical symptoms and become stabilized physically and emotionally.
- Gain a clear understanding of the illness, its characteristics, symptoms, progression,
chronicity and adverse effects.
- Recognize one's own symptoms, reduce defensiveness and increase acceptance.
- Understand the need to follow an abstinence-based recovery plan and assume the responsibility
for maintaining it.
- Develop support, attitudes, strategies and skills needed to maintain abstinence.
- Identify problems and improve functioning in affected life areas.
- Learn the importance of utilizing available self-help groups.
- Include family members in the treatment program to enhance the prospect of the patient's
long-term recovery.
