Heart experts such as the physicians of the TriHealth Heart Institute stress the importance of proper nutrition in limiting the risk of heart disease. Choosing heart-healthy options that are high in fiber and protein but low in saturated fats or processed ingredients can be a challenge when that sweet tooth calls. Don’t go reaching for that box of brownie mix just yet. In this segment of Appetite for Health, the registered dietitians at the TriHealth Fitness & Health Pavilion offer up an easy-to-make but delicious brownie alternative.
2.5 cups almonds
2.5-3 cups Medjool dates, pitted
1 cup raw cacao
¼ teaspoon sea salt
- Place nuts in food processor and blend on high until finely ground
- Add the cacao and salt. Pulse to combine.
- Add your pitted dates one at a time through the feeding tube of the food processor while it’s running. After about 2 minutes you’ll end up with a mix that looks like cake crumbs, but that when pressed will easily stick together. (If the mixture does not hold together well, add more dates.)
- Press into a parchment paper lined cake pan or mold if you want to cut them into bars (you’ll cut them after frozen), otherwise use your hands to roll into small balls. Place in freezer or fridge until ready to serve (it is also easier to cut these when they are very cold/frozen). Store in an airtight container.
