5 Tips to Hit a Healthy Grand Slam on Opening Day

Opening Day is here and it’s time to “root, root, root” for the Cincinnati Reds! Planning on lasting all nine innings? Here are some tips that will help keep you in the game.

Tip #1 Protect Yourself!

Sun burn is the last thing you want to deal with on Opening Day. Go ahead and apply your sunscreen before you hit the stadium! An SPF of 30 or more is perfect for an afternoon at the ballpark. Don’t be shy with your sunscreen. You should reapply about every two hours. Consider throwing on your baseball cap for extra protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Tip #2. Stay Hydrated.

Spring has sprung, and with that comes hotter temperatures. Dehydration can happen easily when you’re at a game in the afternoon heat. Drinking plenty of water is vital in ensuring a safe and energized day at the stadium. Try to stay away from large sodas that can dehydrate you faster. Keep water on you at all times so you can remember to sip on it regularly.

Tip #3. Keep it Nutritious and Delicious.

Let’s face it, ballpark food is not known for being the healthiest option. Hot dogs, nachos and burgers – it’s okay to have some food fun in moderation, but try some of the healthier options around the park. Choose foods with plenty of nutrients that will energize you, not strike you out. Try the thin crust pizza, chicken wraps, fruit cups, sushi and even veggie dogs. The options are there, you just have to find them!

Tip #4. Food for Thought: Eat Mindfully.

Keep your head in the… meal! Eating mindfully means giving full attention to what you are eating- taste every bite, chew slowly and listen to the cues your body is giving you when you are full. Giving complete thought to your meal will keep your mind sharp and prevent overeating.

Tip #5. Be a Team Player.

Looking for a snack? Look with some friends! Sharing is the best way to practice portion control. Try to avoid snacks like crackerjacks, popcorn and French fries. Instead, head for the shelled peanuts. It’s the perfect size bag to split with a couple of friends and still satisfy your craving.
