Doctor on Call: Health Benefits of Nettle Tea

Nettle tea has multiple reported health benefits. In this segment of TriHealth’s Doctor on Call, Janice in South Cumminsville asks about one potential benefit when she asks if nettle tea is good for treating hot flashes, and if so, is it safe to drink if you have hypertension. Adam Grisak MD, a family medicine specialist with TriHealth answers that not much research exists to support that claim, however, there is limited research to support other health benefits. For example, it is shown to be beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis and in supporting prostate health in older men. The extract can even be used topically to relieve joint pain – specifically at the base of the thumb. Dr. Grisak also talks a little about hypertension and its symptoms or sometimes lack thereof. He discusses treatment of hypertension including lifestyle and dietary changes that can be used to reverse it.

Doctor on Call is a segment in partnership with WCPO-TV featuring TriHealth physicians answering medical questions submitted by viewers to WCPO. You can submit a question here.
