Should I Feed My Kids Grains With Gluten?

Scott Woods MD, family practice physician at the Bethesda Family Practice Center and a faculty member at the Bethesda Family Medicine Residency, answers a Local 12 viewer question about whether or not parents should feed their kids grains with gluten.

So, to answer the question of whether or not to feed kids grains with gluten – Dr. Woods indicates that the answer is yes, unless a doctor has diagnosed your child with celiac disease or a gluten allergy, whole grains are recommended for kids.

Gluten Allergy: Symptoms and Diagnosis

Gluten, also known as sprue, is the protein found in wheat and many other foods. Typical symptoms that those with a gluten allergy may experience include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Weight loss

However, “those symptoms can occur in several intestinal disorders,” Dr. Woods points out. “That diagnosis has to be made by a physician – either by a blood test or, more commonly, by a biopsy.”
