Susan Weinberg MD, the founder and co-director of the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care, discusses why a traditional mammogram isn’t enough for some women.
“Some of us have very fatty breasts, where traditional mammography is just fine,” Dr. Weinberg explains. “Many of us have dense breasts, where it’s just not good enough anymore."
Customized Mammography: The Benefit
Approximately 25 to 30 percent of the female population has dense breasts. If you fall into this category, Dr. Weinberg recommends having a 3D digital tomosynthesis mammography, which is an advanced screening that generates a series of thin, high-resolution images that allow doctors to view the breast one layer at a time.
TriHealth’s Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care is one of a just a few facilities offering this leading-edge technology in Greater Cincinnati.
If you are looking for a comparable alternative to digital tomosynthesis, she suggests having a whole breast ultrasound, which is available at the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care. “We are the only center in the Tri-State area to have that modality available,” she says.
Breast Cancer: The High-Risk Category
Those who fall into the high-risk category should be assessed professionally, so they can start being proactive about their breast health now.
“We, thankfully, have a high-risk clinic at the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care to provide you with those services – the assessment of your risk profile, as well as a customized imaging assessment.”
