Transmyocardial Revascularization Laser

Our cardiologists were the first in the region to offer the minimally invasive transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) laser to relieve angina, pain that occurs when the heart is not receiving enough oxygen.

Why Does Angina Occur?

Angina occurs when coronary arteries, the arteries that bring oxygenated blood to the heart, become narrow or blocked. The pain that results is a signal that the heart is not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood. Some patients are able to curb this problem by taking medication, while others benefit from balloon angioplasty, insertion of a stent, or bypass surgery. Some, however, find that these options offer no relief. And that’s where we come in.

Transmyocardial Revascularization Laser Offers Relief

TMR is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a carbon dioxide laser to penetrate the heart muscle and stimulate a substance that encourages new blood channel growth. As more blood vessels form, there is a dramatic improvement in the amount of blood flow to the heart. The TMR laser is generally for those who have tried other options, but have had no success. Although it doesn’t strengthen the heart muscle or help the patient live longer, it does ease this chronic pain.
