Another extremely common disorder, it occurs most commonly in women after age 40. The cause is degenerative osteoarthritis, which nearly everyone gets if they live long enough.

  • soreness and aching discomfort at the base of the thumb near the wrist
  • a weak grip or a pinch from pain
  • swelling of the joint or tenderness under pressure

Seventy percent of the time, conservative treatment is sufficient: a custom-made, hand-based splint, anti-inflammatory medications, or, sometimes, cortisone injections. Surgical procedures to relieve pain and swelling include: removal of the arthritic bone with tendon reconstruction, or a fusion of the carpal and metacarpal bones

In discussing their symptoms with the experienced physicians at Hand Surgery Specialists, patients can determine the best course of treatment for their condition.
