DNA Discovery with TriHealth
What is DNA Discovery with TriHealth?

DNA Discovery with TriHealth is a community health research program that helps you understand how your DNA impacts your health. It aims to help improve access to more personalized health care, while supporting new research discoveries for our community.

There is no cost to participate, and health insurance is not required. We plan to enroll 100,000 participants from our region, who are over age 18, in this impactful research program.

Learn more about how we protect your privacy and data, as well as important considerations for insurance.

Research participation requires your consent and authorization. Signing up is simple. If you choose to participate, you and your doctor will receive confidential results about your genetic risk for certain cancers and heart diseases, which will be released into your medical record. You will also have the option to receive your regional ancestry and genetic traits (like caffeine sensitivity).

The research program will develop a secure and privacy-protected genetic and research database that, over time, will help researchers learn what may cause certain diseases, how to treat them more effectively, and help improve the standard of health care for all. TriHealth is dedicated to breaking down barriers that stand between you and your best health. We passionately pursue educating our community about their health conditions and connecting them with the resources needed to stay healthy.

Program Benefits

Gaining a better understanding of your genetic health risks can help you and your doctor personalize your health care and plan for a healthier future. All participants will learn about their inherited risk for:

  • Common cancers: Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and the most common cause of hereditary colorectal (colon) cancer (Lynch syndrome).
  • Heart disease: Hereditary high cholesterol (also known as familial hypercholesterolemia)

You also have the opportunity to learn about your regional ancestry and other traits like caffeine sensitivity, sleep patterns, and more!

How to participate in the research program

  • Step 1: Visit the enrollment website: Anyone 18 or older can participate, visit the enrollment website [link] hosted by our partner, Helix. You will be asked to confirm your identity by logging into your MyChart account. Once you've logged in, you'll be taken to Helix's enrollment website. At that time, your contact information and some other details associated with your TriHealth account like your name, email, phone number, date of birth and medical record number, will be shared with Helix to assist with the enrollment process. Sharing this information is necessary to allow Helix to enroll you in the research program and ensure a smooth process.
  • Step 2: Learn more and see if you’re eligible: On the Helix website, review the information and complete a few eligibility questions. If eligible, sign a research consent form to enroll. If you have any questions about the study or the consent form, you can contact the DNA Discovery with TriHealth Research Team at DNADiscovery@trihealth.com or by calling 513 862 9954.
  • Step 3: Provide a blood sample: Once enrolled as a research participant, please allow 24-48 hours for the TriHealth lab to receive your order for research sample collection. You can visit one of our participating TriHealth lab locations to provide a blood sample. Your sample will be sent back to our genomics partner, Helix, for analysis. You will also have the opportunity to create an optional free account with Helix to learn additional information, such as your regional ancestry and certain inherited traits. Please review the FAQ below for additional important information.

Getting your results

  • Result Delivery Time: You can expect your genetic screening results in 8-12 weeks.
  • Delivery Method: Genetic screening results are sent via your MyChart account, to your electronic medical record, and to the DNA Discovery with TriHealth Research team. Regional ancestry and genetic traits results can be accessed through an optional Helix account.
  • New Identification of Increased Risk: 1 or 2 out of 100 participants may have an increased genetic risk discovered through the program.
  • Follow-up for Increased Risk: For those with increased risk results, our program team will contact you to offer the option of a no cost appointment with a TriHealth genetic counselor. The purpose of genetic counseling is to help you understand the health implications for you and your family. Any follow-up beyond the initial genetic counseling appointment will be considered clinical care and you and/or your insurance company will be responsible for payment.
