Preterm Birth Risk Factors

Preterm birth is a birth that takes place before the start of the 37th week of pregnancy.

There are a number of risk factors that can contribute to preterm birth, and while some cannot be changed, there are certain risk factors that are modifiable, including:

• Quit smoking before conception.
• Wait at least 12 months between the birth of one child and conceiving the next child.
• For mothers with a history of preterm birth, seek progesterone therapy during pregnancy.
• If you’re undergoing fertility therapy, talk to your doctor about how to mitigate your risk of multiple gestations 

Michael Marcotte MD, of Tri-State Maternal-Fetal Medicine Associates, recommends that if you have risk factors for preterm birth, schedule a visit with an OB specialist before pregnancy, or at least in the first trimester of pregnancy, to discuss options for preventative management.
