In many ways, Ron Harrison views his life as “before and after.” There’s not much similarity between the two.
Before Ron’s gastric bypass, he hung his head and shuffled when he walked. Today his pace is brisk. “I’ve got pride in my step,” he says.
Before his surgery Ron watched his favorite television shows while lying on the couch. Today he watches while lying on the floor exercising.
Before surgery “I blamed everything and everyone for my problems,” Ron says. Now he can barely remember what those problems were.
The changes to Ron’s life following his December 2007 surgery include all the little things that come with being 100 pounds lighter. Like climbing stairs with ease, spending less money on food, and having the energy to visit friends. “Before the weight loss I just didn’t want to do anything,” he recalls.
Ron also is proud of the big changes in his life, like saying goodbye to high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. “You name it, I had it,” Ron says of the diseases that often come with being overweight.
Now a fit and trim 161 pounds, Ron talks like an expert about which foods are healthy, and which are not. He knows which brand of bread has the most fiber, the importance of protein, and how to avoid “empty calories” like beer and fried foods, once staples in his diet.
Ron is quick to credit the staff of the TriHealth Weight Management for his success. He still remembers each of their names. “The staff was excellent; the experience was perfect,” he says. But he knows he deserves credit too, and is proud of his new physique. Today he tucks his shirt into his waistband, and even plans to go shirtless the next time he gets to the beach with his grandchildren. “I’m a one-and-a-half, working on a six-pack!” he laughs.
