August 31, 2021
CINCINNATI, OH. – The delivery of orthopedic care and sports medicine in Greater Cincinnati is being transformed through a pioneering joint venture between two of the region's leading healthcare providers - Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and TriHealth. The partnership will bring break-through advancements in quality, affordability and accessibility to patients and communities across the region.
Once finalized, the landmark affiliation will provide Beacon and TriHealth patients seamless care from minor injuries to major surgeries by establishing the most comprehensive orthopedics and sports medicine program in the Tri-State region. Orthopedic care delivery will be redefined through the complementary and coordinated strengths of these leading independent providers of orthopedic surgical services and sports medicine.
"This is an innovative partnership that will be a model nationally for how independent physician groups can partner with health systems," said Beacon CEO, Andy Blankemeyer. "We are excited to expand our highly-trained and specialized physician network, offering the highest levels of orthopedic and sports medicine care. This collaboration will further enhance patient care by utilizing our experience in managing ambulatory services."
Beacon and TriHealth bring highly complementary assets and capabilities to this unique joint venture. TriHealth operates the most respected health system in the region. It is also recognized as a leader in population health and value-based care – honored by United Healthcare as the top Accountable Care Organization (ACO) in Ohio and by Anthem as the #1 ACO in Ohio and #2 in the country. (ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers, who collaborate to give coordinated high-quality care to deliver on the Triple Aim of enhancing the individual experience of care, improving the health of large populations, and providing better value.)
Beacon, the founders of OrthoAlliance, a national orthopedic management services organization, is the region’s premier provider of orthopedic and sport medicine care. Beacon provides expert care to high school, college and professional athletes throughout Cincinnati while offering a full spectrum of orthopedic care to meet the needs of all patients – at convenient outpatient centers throughout the region. Beacon has developed a constant focus on providing patients & employers with instant access to quality orthopedic care at the best value possible. Since its founding, Beacon’s outpatient surgical centers have also been recognized by major insurers and employers for removing millions of dollars of cost from the local healthcare delivery system.
“Through advancements in technology and surgical techniques, orthopedic care is now more patient-centric than ever – by providing cost-effective care increasingly in convenient outpatient settings,” said Mark C. Clement, TriHealth President & CEO. “This partnership fits perfectly within TriHealth’s vision to deliver on the Triple Aim – better health and better care at a better value. And, while Beacon will remain an independent organization, this partnership enhances TriHealth’s network of hospitals, ambulatory centers and employed and private practice physicians with the aim to make orthopedics care more affordable and accessible.”
The partnership will include the following essential elements:
- First, TriHealth and Beacon will combine their existing orthopedic ambulatory surgery centers to create the region’s most comprehensive and accessible network of such outpatient facilities, including the Summit Woods Surgery Center, Beacon West Surgery Center and the TriHealth Hand Surgery Center. A future site will also be developed on the Evendale campus. The jointly governed network of facilities will be operated by Beacon on a day-to-day basis, utilizing their strengths in developing and managing outpatient orthopedic centers. This will allow greater access to affordable and high-quality care across the region.
- Second, TriHealth orthopedic and hand surgeon physicians will have the option to join Beacon – creating a highly coordinated and specialized team of physicians with office locations across Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and southeastern Indiana. This group of physicians will provide patients with immediate access to all forms of orthopedic care, in convenient community-based locations. TriHealth pain management, podiatry and physical medicine & rehabilitation providers will remain in TriHealth’s employed physician group.
- Finally, through a co-management agreement, Beacon will provide support in leading the TriHealth musculoskeletal service line at all TriHealth hospitals. Through this arrangement, TriHealth and Beacon will work together to manage the full range of musculoskeletal services with TriHealth continuing to oversee the day-to-day management of the hospital-based orthopedic and sports services.
“Through this partnership, we can provide patients more convenient access to the precise care they require. Our physicians will work together to establish best-in-class treatment protocols to ensure patients are receiving the highest quality care possible,” said Dr. Peter Cha, President of Beacon. “TriHealth, who shares Beacon’s commitment to customer service, high-quality care, and value, is the logical partner for us in taking this next bold step.”
“The joining of forces with existing Beacon physicians and TriHealth to form a comprehensive orthopedic team is exciting for the healthcare community at large,” said Dr. Thomas Shockley, a TriHealth orthopedic surgeon. “Beacon and Trihealth have a proven track record of providing high quality care to patients in Greater Cincinnati and this partnership will only make it better.”
