Colon and Rectal Surgery

Colon and Rectal Surgery at TriHealth

The section of Colon and Rectal Surgery within the TriHealth Surgical Institute offers surgical expertise in the management and treatment of conditions affecting the intestinal tract, colon, rectum, and anal canal, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques and sphincter-persevering procedures. Our approach expands beyond the expertise of each individual surgeon to include a team approach that includes our nurses and nurse practitioner, who are fully dedicated to the needs of each one of our patients, our cancer care coordinators to help patients navigate their appointments and care, and our committed office staff who understand the sensitive issues surrounding the conditions we treat.

As part of our integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to your care, we work closely with specialists across the board, including physicians and practitioners from TriHealth Digestive Institute and TriHealth Cancer Institute, as well as primary care physicians, radiologists, gynecologists, urologists, physical therapists, enterostomal nurses, and nutritionists, to develop an individualized and comprehensive care plan.

The Benefits of Being Treated by a Colorectal Surgeon

Colorectal surgery is a Board Certified specialty with expertise in management of conditions of the colon and rectum. All colorectal surgeons must obtain additional fellowship training beyond general surgical training that is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of these conditions. The American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery must then certify each colorectal surgeon. Such training extends beyond the surgical management to include medical and non-surgical options for treatment of certain conditions. At Trihealth, you will benefit from evaluation and treatment by board certified colorectal surgeons whose practice is dedicated to colorectal surgery and who are also members of the American Society of Colorectal Surgery.

Laparoscopic and Robotic Colorectal Surgery

Our team is ready to care for patients through the use of the latest in surgical approaches such as laparoscopic and robotic colon and rectal surgery.

Minimally invasive surgical approaches, including robotic and laparoscopic surgery, are just a few examples of the advanced techniques utilized by our team. Advantages of such methods include:

  • Smaller incisions, less pain, and less requirement of pain medications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery with earlier recovery of bowel function and resumption of eating
  • Earlier return to work/ full activity
  • For cancer patients requiring chemotherapy, speedier recovery allows for shorter time to start of necessary treatment

Sphincter-preservation

At TriHealth, we offer surgical options for the treatment of mid to low rectal cancer with the goal of preservation the anal sphincter muscle complex to avoid a permanent colostomy. We also work with our patients after surgery on the management of bowel function to insure good quality of life with the preservation of sphincter complex.

Getting Ready For Your Surgery

TriHealth Surgical Optimization Center (TSOC)

Patients who are recommended to undergo surgical resection at TriHealth are referred to our specialized pre-operative optimization program to insure they are in the best shape possible for their upcoming operation to minimize complications and insure the best recovery. Each patient is assessed in advance of their surgery for conditions that may increase their risk for complications. Based on that assessment, we work with our patients to optimize such conditions to maximize the chance of complication-free operation. We also follow each patient closely after they are discharged from the hospital but still recovering, through both phone calls and multiple schedule visits with our surgical team.
