Special Delivery Unit

Special Delivery Unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

A collaboration between Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and TriHealth, the Fetal Care Center’s Special Delivery Unit provides a new model for delivery and care for babies with known medical conditions. In the past, fragile babies have been born at other hospitals in the region and urgently transported to Cincinnati Children’s NICU and CICU. Through this collaboration, these babies will now avoid emergency transport and will be born just down the hall from the CCHMC NICU and 2 floors away from the Children’s Hospital CICU.

Not all fetal conditions require delivery in our Special Delivery Unit. Your medical team will work with you to create a birth plan and recommend the delivery location that may be best for you and your baby. If your baby needs advanced medical care or surgery right after birth, you may be able to deliver at the Cincinnati Children's Fetal Care Center’s Special Delivery Unit staffed by experts in Maternal Fetal Medicine and OB Anesthesiology in partnership with TriHealth. It is one of only a few birthing centers located inside a pediatric hospital.

TriHealth Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians provide prenatal care and delivery in the newly dedicated Special Delivery Unit located at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Cincinnati Children’s provides expertise in fetal therapy, NICU and pediatric sub-specialty services.

In addition to two new operating rooms to increase access to fetal surgery procedures and c-section deliveries, the new center includes six dedicated rooms for labor, delivery (vaginal or cesarean), triage unit and postpartum recovery. Special delivery services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This means that moms will no longer stay behind at a birthing hospital, separated from their newborns. Families will be together in one location.
