TriHealth is pleased to announce the availability of 3D mammogram technology at the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care at Bethesda North Hospital. The center is the first in the greater Cincinnati region to use 3D mammogram technology (tomosynthesis) for screenings.
Breast tomosynthesis is a revolutionary technology that allows radiologists the ability to more reliably assess breast anatomy without the confusion of overlapping breast tissue. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast. Two of the many benefits of tomosynthesis are the reduction of false positives and earlier detection.
“Tomosynthesis enables us to decrease the recall rates for patients and increase the number of breast cancers detected particularly in dense breasts,” says Dr. Susan Weinberg Co-director of the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care at Bethesda North Hospital.
By offering women the latest technology in mammography, TriHealth hopes to increase the number of area women screened for breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent.
TriHealth and the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care at Bethesda North Hospital are committed to the fight against breast cancer. Offering 3D breast tomosynthesis digital mammography provides the latest in imaging quality, and keeps TriHealth on the leading edge of the fight against breast cancer in greater Cincinnati.
