Terri Schork has worked hard to lose a significant amount of weight, but her story is one that does not focus on the numbers of pounds and inches. Instead, the results of her fitness efforts are evidenced in what she can do.
A lifetime of being active, walking, running and playing sports was short-circuited a few years ago as Terri experienced a series of health setbacks. “I gained weight as a result,” she says. In addition to the impact on her health, Terri says, “I avoided doing certain things, shopping and going places,” and found life was constricted.
She began doing water exercise at another facility but found it was not meeting her needs. "I needed to go beyond water," she says. Terri began to shop around, found the TriHealth Fitness and Health Pavilion in July 2005, and is so happy she did!
The Pavilion offered her the array of options she was seeking. “I could do a dance class here every day,” she enthuses. She regularly participates in a wide variety of fitness classes, and says she particularly loves Move & Groove and Zumba! Spinning is another favorite class -- “Jen Jura is a smart cookie,” Terri adds. She works out on the fitness floor regularly as well.
But, she hit a plateau – which is common – and needed that extra “oomph” to get back to seeing results. “I have never signed up for any program,” she attests, but the Biggest Winner program caught her interest and her competitive nature kicked in. "It really is motivational and the workouts are very hard,” she says, “but it is good because it makes you try different things – forces you out of your comfort zone – I don’t even remember the comfort zone!” she laughs. Biggest Winner helped Terri break through the plateau, and, even better, she says, “I was most proud that even once the program was over I kept losing weight!”
Since that one fitness incentive program was such a positive experience for her, Terri has signed up for more, participating in the Fitness Challenge and the Ironman Triathlon in 2013. “The Ironman has me rowing,” she says, “I have never rowed in my life and I like it!” Again, so much for the “comfort zone!”
Terri salutes the professionalism and skill of Pavilion fitness staff and trainers. “Everybody is so professional and knowledgeable, so good at what they do,” she says, “always patient and encouraging.” It’s the personal touch that makes the difference as well, she says, “the fitness instructors know their classes so well they notice when you are not there.” She enjoys working with Personal Trainer Kris Bellush, whom she calls “so encouraging and sweet, and knowledgeable – she knows what to have me do to get where I want to go.”
Terri makes it a family affair by bringing her two grandsons, ages 4 and about 18 months, to the Kids Life Center, which they thoroughly enjoy. “I give the ladies in the KLC a lot of credit,” she smiles, “the boys are so happy there, the younger one even cried once when he had to leave!”
Losing weight and improving her mobility means Terri can do what she wants, which, after spending years feeling held back by her physical condition, she says, “It’s liberating!”
