TriHealth announced Good Samaritan Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Cardiac Valve Repair and Replacement Disease Specific Certification for cardiac valve repair and replacement. Good Samarian becomes the first hospital in the state of Ohio to achieve the designation and just the third in the entire country.

“We are thrilled to be the only hospital in the state of Ohio to have achieved such a prestigious certification from the Joint Commission,” said J. Michael Smith MD., Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital.  “This award is a shining example of all the good that comes from team based care. There is not one person responsible for our success rather it’s about the totality of a team being able to perform more types of valve procedures than anyone else in the region. The proof of our success is in our outcomes.”

The Disease Specification Certification is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. Good Samaritan Hospital underwent a rigorous on-site review in October. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as with valve repair and replacement-specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.

“Good Samaritan Hospital has thoroughly demonstrated a high level of care for patients in need of cardiac valve repair and replacement,” said Patrick Phelan, executive director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. “We commend Good Samaritan for becoming a leader in cardiac care, potentially providing a higher standard of service for cardiac valve repair and replacement patients in the state and in its community.”

Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:

•Compliance with consensus-based national standards;

•Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and

•An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

“Good Samaritan is pleased to receive Cardiac Valve Repair and Replacement Disease Specific Certification from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” said Lisa Baker, Executive Director of the TriHealth Cardiovascular Service Line. “All of our team members from across our system continue to work together to develop and implement approaches that improve care for our cardiovascular patients.”
