Program rooted in clinical advancement

TriHealth’s advanced robotic surgery program is based on the desire to provide the latest, non-invasive surgical techniques for the benefit of patients. This pioneering spirit has been carried out through the years:

  • Beginning in 2003 with the first advanced robotic-assisted cardiac surgery in the region, using the da Vinci® Surgical System.
  • In 2011, introducing SpineAssist at Bethesda North Hospital, allowing surgeons to perform minimally invasive spinal surgery.

Today, TriHealth Robotic surgery enables surgeons to be more precise, advancing their technique and enhancing their capability in performing complex minimally invasive surgery. The TriHealth robotic da Vinci® Surgical System replicates the surgeon’s movements in real time, functioning only with the surgeon’s input.

Since 2004, we have completed more than 13,000 robotic-assisted procedures, including:

  • More than 1,200 cardiothoracic procedures
  • More than 2,300 general surgery, surgical oncologic, and colorectal procedures
  • More than 5,200 gynecologic, gynecologic oncologic, and urogynecologic procedures
  • More than 4,000 urologic and urologic oncologic procedures
  • More than 2,300 general surgery, surgical oncologic, and colorectal procedures

Nowhere else in Greater Cincinnati can patients these robotic-assisted, complex procedure options:

  • Mitral valve repair
  • Cystectomy (bladder removal) with intracorporeal neobladder (reconstruction of new bladder within the body cavity)
  • Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) – removal of head of the pancreas, the gallbladder, part of the duodenum, a portion of the common bile duct, and sometimes part of the stomach

Personalized, advanced care

TriHealth’s compassionate surgeons have the latest technologies available to them, including the da Vinci® Surgical System, in order to provide the most appropriate surgical care for each patient. That full range of options includes:

  • Open surgery. The standard for many years, open surgery requires a large incision. It provides superior access to the body and gives surgeons the best possible chance to fix the problem. It’s effective for many procedures, but it’s highly invasive and could result in significant blood loss and lengthy recovery times.
  • Laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic surgery allows physicians to operate through small incisions, which usually means less bleeding and scarring and quicker recovery time. Because of limitations of the instruments, it is most commonly used for routine procedures, but not complex ones.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery. Changing the way surgeons can operate, robotic surgery is an effective, minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy – even for highly complex surgeries – made possible through the use of the da Vinci® Surgical System. In addition to the benefits of potentially less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal daily activities, robotic surgery provides patients the potential for better clinical outcomes.
