Infant Safety & Security in Hospitals

Where you choose to welcome your baby is an important life decision. At TriHealth, safety, security, privacy and comfort for you and your little one are at the heart of everything we do. From our dedicated maternity team to our comprehensive security systems and safety protocols, we provide an environment where you’ll feel supported and protected.

Your labor and delivery experience is uniquely yours. We’ll work with you to build a birth plan that honors your wishes and follows our safety measures. And we’ll create a nurturing space where you can connect and bond with your baby. As your health care partner, we provide a wide range of security features that help you focus on what matters most — your growing family.

Our Infant Security System

At TriHealth, your baby’s safety is one of our top priorities. We use a coordinated infant security system to protect every baby born in one of our delivery hospitals. This system includes:

  • Electronic security tags: These baby ankle monitors connect to our maternity unit’s monitoring system. They trigger an alarm and automatically lock doors if your baby is close to a restricted exit.
  • Matching identification bracelets: These bracelets link you, your baby and your designated support person while you’re in the hospital.
  • Routine ID checks: We check and match identification bracelets for you and your baby each time your baby leaves your room for a test, procedure or nursery visit.
  • Special maternity team badges: Our specially trained maternity team members wear unique badges that differ from those of other TriHealth staff. These badges make it easy for you to identify members of your care team.

Locked Units and Controlled Access

Your peace and privacy after giving birth matter to us. To provide a calm setting, our labor, delivery, postpartum and special care nurseries are secure units. Access doors are locked and monitored by our maternity staff and security team. We also offer these security features:

  • 24/7 onsite security: Trained TriHealth security officers monitor entrances and common areas, respond to maternity unit access alarms and assist with visitor check-in.
  • Controlled access: Approved visitors must check in before entering.
  • In-room call buttons and intercoms: When you need care or help, your nurse is only a button-press away.
  • Integrated alarms: Alarms trigger and doors lock automatically when electronic tags get close to restricted exits.
  • Video monitoring: Video cameras monitor every entry point and all common areas.

Visitor Screening and Check-In

Your baby’s birth is a special time to share with your family. We want you and your loved ones to feel safe during your hospital stay. To reach that goal, we screen all visitors before they enter our maternity and newborn areas.

All visitors must present a photo ID upon arrival. After verifying their name is on the approved visitor list, we give them a visible pass to wear while they’re in the unit. Additional visitation guidelines apply if your baby is in the special nursery or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), especially for young visitors or anyone with a recent illness.

[H2] Additional Maternity Unit Safety Practices

Keeping your baby safe and healthy is our maternity team’s priority. You can rely on us to practice these safe behaviors:

  • Hand hygiene: Every member of your care team washes or sanitizes their hands before touching your baby. We ask all family members and visitors to do the same.
  • Feeding safety: We properly label and store all expressed breast milk. If your baby needs formula, we prepare it according to strict safety guidelines.
  • Safe sleep: Our nurses follow and teach safe sleep practices. We place your baby on their back in a bassinet to sleep.

Key Safety Tips

As a new parent, you’re a key part of your baby’s safety team. We encourage you to follow these steps to keep your newborn safe during your hospital stay:

  • Ask every visitor to wash or sanitize their hands before touching your baby.
  • Check ID bracelets with your nurse every time your baby leaves or returns to your room.
  • Don’t remove your baby’s security tag.
  • Only give your baby to a care team member with a maternity team badge.
  • Put your baby in the bassinet if you need to rest.
  • Request that visitors who are sick stay home.
  • Share any questions or concerns with your care team.
