Screening Tests
We use screening tests to detect possible health problems before they cause significant symptoms. These tests include blood work, physical exams and simple procedures. They let us know if you’re at risk for a health condition. Based on your screening results, we may recommend additional testing.
Routine preventive health screenings are part of our commitment to keeping you healthy and active. We recommend these screenings for all adults:
- Blood pressure: All adults over 40 should have at least one screening every year.
- Cancer: Most cancers don’t have specific screening tests. Instead, we use routine blood work to detect unusual protein or cell count levels that may indicate disease.
- Colonoscopy: All adults between 45 and 70 should have this colon cancer screening test every 10 years.
- Comprehensive blood work: All adults over 19 need cholesterol screenings at least every five years. Adults over 45 should start blood sugar testing every three years to screen for diabetes.
- Dental exams: All adults over 19 should have a routine dental exam every six to 12 months.
- Lung cancer:Adults between 50 and 80 who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for at least 20 years should have an annual CT scan to check for lung cancer.
- Skin cancer: If you’ve had skin cancer, we recommend a routine dermatology checkup every six months.
Like men, women also need specific screening services. These tests include:
- Bone density: Women 65 and older should have this one-time screening test, called the DEXA bone scan.
- Mammogram: Beginning at 40, all women should have this breast cancer screening every one to two years. At 50, begin annual screening.
- Pap smear: To screen for human papillomavirus (HPV), women between 19 and 64 should have this test every one to three years. If you’re over 65, talk to your doctor.
In addition to these general screenings, men need screening for prostate cancer. This blood test measures the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level in your blood.
Most men begin screening at age 50 and have the test every one to three years. But, based on your personal risk factors, we may recommend earlier and more frequent testing.
