What is Osteoporosis (Weak Bones)?

Osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones become less dense and more fragile. It is most common in women over the age of 65 and can increase the risk of a hip/leg/arm/back fracture. About 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass.

Why is a Bone Health Program important?

Your Primary Care physician is the center of your overall health and most familiar with your medical history and individual needs & preferences. The Bone Health Program extends that partnership by offering specialized expertise and collaborating with OB/GYNs, Rheumatologists, Endocrinologists and Orthopedic providers. By working together, they can:

  • Identify potential bone health concerns during regular primary care visits.
  • Offer a smooth referral process to the Bone Health Program for in-depth evaluation and treatment planning.
  • Develop a personalized treatment plan that integrates seamlessly with your existing care plan.
  • Ensure clear communication between the Bone Health Program and primary care physician, keeping everyone informed.
  • Improve bone health and reduce the risk of fractures across TriHealth patients. Early identification and intervention can have significant improvement in the risk of fractures and improve the population health outcomes.
How does your provider check for Osteoporosis (Weak Bones)?

After listening to your symptoms and concerns, your doctor may order a DXA scan to check for bone loss, to prevent fractures before they happen, or to monitor how well your treatment is working. It’s especially helpful if you’re postmenopausal, have had a previous fracture, take medications that weaken bones (such as long-term steroids), or have medical conditions that affect bone quality. DXA gives your care team clear, precise information so you can take the right next steps for your bone health.
