Cervical Fracture

A cervical fracture is a traumatic injury and requires immediate emergency medical attention. It occurs when one of the seven bones in the cervical spine (neck) becomes fractured. This can be a severe and complex injury that can impact the spinal cord. If the fracture causes damage to the spinal cord, complications can include temporary or permanent loss of function.

Cervical fracture causes

A cervical fracture most often happens as a result of sudden, high-force trauma to the neck. There are several different causes of trauma that can lead to a fracture. These include:

  • Automobile accident, bike accident or ATV accident
  • Diving into a shallow pool of water
  • Head or neck injury while playing a sport
  • Sudden fall from a high height

Cervical fracture symptoms

If you suspect someone has a cervical fracture, call 911 immediately. Symptoms of a broken neck may include:

  • Bruising and swelling in the neck area
  • Loss of consciousness after a fall or accident
  • Pain that spreads to the shoulders or arms
  • Severe neck pain

Cervical fracture treatment

The first step in treating a cervical fracture is to immobilize the neck. Then, a spinal surgeon will perform a complex surgery to stabilize the neck with hardware. TriHealth Orthopedics & Sports Institute has the only Mazor X spine robot in the entire state of Ohio. This robotic surgery allows your surgeon to precisely perform the procedure based on your anatomy and injury.

After surgery, our rehabilitation team will help you rebuild strength, stamina and movement. Your recovery plan will be customized to your injury and needs.

Cervical fracture prevention

Cervical fractures are caused by sudden and often accidental trauma. It may be impossible to reduce your risk completely, but you can take steps to keep yourself safe.

  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Follow rules for safe game play
  • Never dive into shallow water
  • Take safety precautions when using ladders or other climbing equipment
  • Wear safety gear when playing sports
